Aims and Objectives

NS FRITS Aims Truck Theft

  • NS FRITS aims to improve accessibility, contribute to sustainable economic development and growth and improve the quality of life and job opportunities for people living and working in the North Sea Region.
  • An Intelligent Transport Solution (ITS) will be developed to provide live in-cab communications to HGV drivers about conditions in a region or country they are about to enter.
  • The ITS will be placed in key transport corridors providing up-to-date information regarding traffic flow, congestion, safety and security
  • The ITS will initially be aimed at the freight supply chain and will utilise the most relevant ICT to transmit and receive data in a series of languages to lone workers as they travel across the North Sea Region
  • NS FRITS will improve efficiencies in the supply chain and provide environmental benefits as travel flow will be smoother with fewer disruptions and loss
  • The quality of life for lone workers within the transport and logistics sectors will be significantly improve as risk and threat is reduced
  • NS FRITS will be designed so that it can be continually developed both within the North Sea Region and beyond
  • It will provide a legacy of good practice for the logistics sector which will provide future benefits across the EU
  • NS FRITS will encourage transnational and cross-sectoral integration and cooperation as the public and private sectors works in partnership to develop and benefit from the system
  • Learn from, add value to and co-operate with other EU projects
  • Support, influence national and EU policies by raising awareness of difficulties that exist within multimodal transport and logistics operations
  • Contribute to the Lisbon and Gothenburg strategies by providing innovative solutions that support the region's ability to compete globally and offer opportunities for sustainable economic growth, competitiveness, positive socio-economic impact and environmental benefits

NS FRITS Objectives

  • Develop a multi-lingual electronic communication and data capture system for the freight supply chain to provide end users; drivers, fleet / transport managers, freight handlers, with information about conditions in the country / region / area they are about to enter
  • Assist with key issues in the NSR such as transport congestion, traffic flow, safety and security
  • Improve interoperability and integration between transnational and secondary networks providing visibility across supply chains, sharing data, so that all elements of the supply chain benefit
  • Improve performance, profitability and competitiveness of long distance and intermodal services
  • Establish an ICT solution that includes telecommunications and the increasing range of sensory, location, security identification and data capture leading edge technologies within the supply chain, which will transmit data at ports and other criteria transport corridor points
  • Contribute to the further take up of ICT by the logistics sector and to overcoming the digital divide that exists in parts of the NSR
  • Establish a sustainable cross-sectoral partnership for the collection and transmission of relevant data that will be used to inform the freight supply chain and other relevant agencies
  • Identify and prioritise the nature of the information that is to be transmitted considering quality, quantity and format of the data
  • Reduce economic and social risks that exist in the supply chain, specifically related to losses, late deliveries, security, road safety and driver conditions of service
  • Support and work in co-operation with other EU / Interreg projects
  • Build functionality and capacity into the system to enable compatibility for additional services to be introduced in the future to meet the changing needs of logistics operators and the growing challenges within the freight supply chain throughout Europe
