NS FRITS has been tested during a live event at the port of Bremerhaven. NS FRITS aims to improve efficiency, safety and security for the freight sector in the North Sea region.
A demonstration took place at the German port on 17th June. The system was tested using three real-life scenarios based on the experiences of drivers from the Port of Bremerhaven, Rotterdam to Bremerhaven and finally Bremerhaven to Norway.
The workshops showed how the system helps drivers with route information during the three journeys including notification of secure parking areas, live traffic updates, crime hotspots, lorry specific road conditions and weather alerts. The scenarios showed how communications between trucks and port terminals will be improved; drivers will be notified of truck appointment slots and the arrival of container ships.
The workshop was hosted by key NS FRITS partners and stakeholders including Volvo, People United Against Crime, Avanti Communications, ISL, Certec Automation Partners, KLPD, the Port of Felixstowe and Bremerhaven.
Research has been conducted to ensure that NS FRITS will improve the accessibility for the road freight sector in the North Sea Region. The overall objective is to improve traffic flow, reducing security threats to drivers, addressing logistical issues around congestion and freight volumes and reducing carbon emissions.
ISL have conducted worldwide port research including visits to Rotterdam and Felixstowe and have surveyed drivers in Bremerhaven to assess the issues being faced. The scenarios also allow the system to be thoroughly assessed ensuring that NS FRITS is making improvements in the right areas and is achieving the expected impact within the freight sector. The NS FRITS system development and testing will be completed by 2011.
