NS FRITS used to improve transport in the North Sea Region

Written on 1st July, 2010 by Ms Lucy Straker

NS FRITS is being developed using the latest freight transport technologies. The NS FRITS system is an intelligent transport solution that will help make freight transport in the North Sea Region more efficient, reliable and safer. The system will provide information for drivers in the region and will address issues such as freight volumes, congestion, emissions and associated security threats.

NS FRITS will provide transport related data from a variety of sources and providers including governmental organisations and initiatives which supply traffic and weather conditions data, secure parking availability, freight crime hotspots and route planning. The information will be presented to users in text, graphical and map formats.

Processing algorithms are being developed that manipulate, format, aggregate and distribute data to users. Multiple communication channels are used for data distribution including GPRS and satellite. Satellite will be used where users are in geographically challenging terrain or where terrestrial communications are limited. Desk-bound users can access this information through a web-based desktop model using Java Enterprise Edition (J2EE) technologies with enhanced web capabilities based on Google Web Toolkit (GWT). There is also a mobile model which will run on an Android mobile phone, using Android 2 mobile platform Application Programming Interface (API) with GPS, WiFi communication and 3G. Other mobile platforms like iPhone, symbian, and maemo will be provided in due course.
